What Deck Restoration Actually Is
Deck restoration is a comprehensive process that brings an aging deck back to useful life when the underlying structure is still appropriate for it. It is more than a repair and more than a simple refinishing. It addresses the surface, the damaged components, the coating, and the details like railings and stairs that make a deck safe and usable.
We added deck restoration to our services approximately 13 years ago. Since then, we have transformed close to 1,000 decks of different shapes, sizes, ages, and conditions. That experience is what lets us look at a rough-looking deck and know whether it is a restoration candidate or a rebuild.
Our Deck Restoration Process
We inspect the deck in person to determine whether the structure is appropriate for restoration. If it is not, we tell you that honestly.
We locate rotten boards, loose fasteners, failing railings, and damaged stairs so we know exactly what needs replacing.
Damaged surface boards and structural components are replaced where needed. Sound material stays.
We fix loose railings, wobbly stairs, and other problem spots that make a deck feel unsafe or look worn.
The deck is cleaned and the surface is prepared so the new coating actually bonds and lasts.
Sanding removes splinters, old coating, and raised grain so the surface is ready for finishing.
Depending on the project, we apply stain, paint, or a protective coating suited to the wood and the exposure.
Railings and stairs get attention as part of the restoration, not as an afterthought.
We complete the finishing, clean the site, and hand back a deck that is ready to use.
Deck Repair vs. Deck Restoration vs. Deck Resurfacing vs. Deck Replacement
These terms get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you know what your deck actually needs.
- Deck repair fixes specific problems — a rotten board, a loose railing, a damaged stair. It is targeted and limited.
- Deck restoration is a complete process that renews the whole deck surface and structure when the framing is still good. It includes repair, cleaning, coating, and component improvements.
- Deck resurfacing replaces the walking surface boards but keeps the existing framing. It can be one part of a restoration, or a standalone project.
- Deck replacement means tearing the deck down and building a new one. It is the right call when the structure is failing or the layout no longer works.

When Restoration Makes Sense
Restoration is worth evaluating when the structural framing is still solid, even if the surface looks bad. A gray, splintering deck with peeling stain can still be a strong restoration candidate. A deck with rotting joists is not. The only way to know is an inspection.
